BNP Near Settlement With U.S. for Up to $9 Billion - WSJ

What does not seem to be a part of the French reporting on all this is any sense that BNP allegedly broke US law. That concept is neither upfront nor anywhere in view in almost every story I have seen. In the US, we always say that we are a country of laws and not of men; here in France, it is more like we are a country of politics and men when it comes to finance; laws are more decoration than strict rules by which to live. It is very odd that this is the case with such a big matter as this one and yet other rules like automatic radar detection and fines are a part of French life. It is almost as though some issues are too important for the law; only politics can apply in those cases. Weird.

My Little Brasil : Le Brésil, en français !

Fire people

This past week was firefighter day in France - several programs talking about the work - one on Telematin news on 13 June. I believe they said that 80% of firefighters in France are volunteers. That surprised me. What is it in the US? They are also concerned that not enough are women. I suspect a similar challenge in the US?
