While the French consumption of salt is going down, it remains, for me, twice the recommended amount (by the world body that deals with such things) at 10 grams (rec is 5), and French women are at 8.

France is at 23 out of 54. Where would the US rank if the test were of French ability?

"Meat Loaf Endorses Romney" - NYTimes.com
I look forward to the French reporting of this and the pronunciation!
"Débat Fillon-Copé : le renard et le bélier" - Les Echos
In the US, I do not recall any such focus on the out-of-party leader selection. Understanding why it is so important in France, seemingly, might help both countries deal more effectively with their respective politics.

Five month wait for ophthalmologist?
That seems to be the case in France. Story on France3's 19/20 on 16 Oct 2012.

TTC
Why don't businesses - wanting to be good citizens - post prices with and without sales taxes as they do in France? This is a good example of where it would be very useful.

"Aggravation de l'épidémie de méningite aux Etats-Unis" - Le Monde
What a serious situation! What can we learn in the US to avoid this? What has France done?

"La crise nuit gravement à la santé des Français" - Nice-Matin
This would make for a good comparison between the US and France.

There is still so much more to be learned from studying one another's approach to health care.

COMPARE THE CANDIDATES - Virgil Goode for President 2012
TF1 in France profiled GOODE tonight. How scary is that?
"Quantum Particle Work Wins Nobel for French, U.S. Scientists" - NYTimes.com

"Marseille : l'ouverture des commerces le dimanche ne prend pas !" - La Provence
Sunday sure is a different day in North Carolina than it is in Nice, from so many perspectives.
"Il dépose plainte contre les cloches de la cathédrale de Vence!" - Nice-Matin
I wonder how many the-church-bells-are-too-loud lawsuits get filed in the US?

"Chapel Hill Creamery Asiago takes Best in Show at State Fair" - NewsObserver.com
How about a blind taste test, simultaneously in both countries, of the very best cheeses? There may be some problems getting the best French cheese into the US for the test, but I bet there is a way around that without violating any law.
"Reforms credited for driving juvenile crime down in North Carolina" - Crime/Safety - NewsObserver.com
How does this compare with France, and especially Nice?

"Ride-Sharing Services Grow Popular in Europe" - NYTimes.com
There is a lot to compare fruitfully between France and the US on this subject.
Plastic bags
I wonder what really happens to plastic bags in NC that are dumped at various supermarkets? What do they become? Where do they go? Why are we able to do this but in Nice, they do not collect any plastic bags for recycling? It seems like part of this story is missing.

"In Europe, Speed Cameras Meet Their Technological Match" - NYTimes.com
There is much to be learned in both directions. The fact remains that if you violate the law, irregardless of the technology, you should pay the price.
Cigarettes
The price of cigarettes has just risen again today in France. I wonder what the average per cigarette price is today in France compared with the US? And of that cost, how much goes to the respective governments? If I understood the report correctly, cigarettes are about 5 USD/pack in Spain, about 5.25 in Italy and now cost over 8 USD/pack in France.
"A Nice, donner son corps à la science peut coûter cher" - Nice-Matin
How does it work in the US? Do many people give their bodies to science? Enough? Too many?

"A Soft-Pedaled Escape From Paris" - NYTimes.com
How many of these routes do we have out of New York or Washington (C&O Canal?)?
"Marseille : des riverains expulsent les Roms et brûlent leur camp" - La Provence
Imagine in the US that a group of Mexicans or Guatemalans, or hippies or Mormons, or Native Aamericans, or - you name it, set up a camp near you. And suppose that you did not like them for whatever reasons. Is it possible to imagine today that the neighbors would force them to move and then burn their camp? It's worth thinking hard on that one.
