There is still so much more to be learned from studying one another's approach to health care.

"Marseille : l'ouverture des commerces le dimanche ne prend pas !" - La Provence

Sunday sure is a different day in North Carolina than it is in Nice, from so many perspectives.

"Il dépose plainte contre les cloches de la cathédrale de Vence!" - Nice-Matin

I wonder how many the-church-bells-are-too-loud lawsuits get filed in the US?

"Chapel Hill Creamery Asiago takes Best in Show at State Fair" - NewsObserver.com

How about a blind taste test, simultaneously in both countries, of the very best cheeses? There may be some problems getting the best French cheese into the US for the test, but I bet there is a way around that without violating any law.

"To Paris with love: A trip in honor of mom" - NewsObserver.com

I hope Paris welcomes her well.

10 euro coins in France; and in the US?

"Ride-Sharing Services Grow Popular in Europe" - NYTimes.com

There is a lot to compare fruitfully between France and the US on this subject.

Plastic bags

I wonder what really happens to plastic bags in NC that are dumped at various supermarkets? What do they become? Where do they go? Why are we able to do this but in Nice, they do not collect any plastic bags for recycling? It seems like part of this story is missing.

"Une Residence Pas Si Secondaire" - France5

What percentage of people in the US have second homes?

"In Europe, Speed Cameras Meet Their Technological Match" - NYTimes.com

There is much to be learned in both directions. The fact remains that if you violate the law, irregardless of the technology, you should pay the price.

Cigarettes

The price of cigarettes has just risen again today in France. I wonder what the average per cigarette price is today in France compared with the US? And of that cost, how much goes to the respective governments? If I understood the report correctly, cigarettes are about 5 USD/pack in Spain, about 5.25 in Italy and now cost over 8 USD/pack in France.

"A Nice, donner son corps à la science peut coûter cher" - Nice-Matin

How does it work in the US? Do many people give their bodies to science? Enough? Too many?

"A Soft-Pedaled Escape From Paris" - NYTimes.com

How many of these routes do we have out of New York or Washington (C&O Canal?)?

"Marseille : des riverains expulsent les Roms et brûlent leur camp" - La Provence

Imagine in the US that a group of Mexicans or Guatemalans, or hippies or Mormons, or Native Aamericans, or - you name it, set up a camp near you. And suppose that you did not like them for whatever reasons. Is it possible to imagine today that the neighbors would force them to move and then burn their camp? It's worth thinking hard on that one.

Peugeot’s Troubles Test François Hollande’s Contradictory Campaign Promises - NYTimes.com

How could we do a meaningful comparison of how Presidents HOLLANDE and OBAMA are "doing" in their respective countries? This would be a chart, perhaps, with issues facing them and what they are doing - are able to do - in confronting these issues - and what success, or not, they are having.

Mosquito control measures

Each country is pursuing mosquito-suppression measures quite similar in many respect, but, of course, always a little different. What can we learn from one another?
