My thoughts in response to a relative asking me how things are going in Nice after the Paris attacks
"The response here in Nice is
about what you are seeing from Paris and you yourself experienced after the
Boston Marathon. It’s kind of a concentric circle thing, I think. In the center
are all those people who died, followed by those who are still in intensive
care, and those injured. After that, it is those nearby who, like you, saw the
worst of what happened and felt the fear. One or two of them from Nice and
environs were in Paris and they have returned to tell their stories and to cope
with their feelings. Then it is the families of those people killed or injured,
and their friends. Here in Nice, we lost no one directly, but some of those who
died were from towns not too far away and there are a few people who knew a
couple of them, but not many. So the next ring are those people who frighten
easily and I feel for them, because there are too many people here sealed off
from others to begin with and this makes them even more remote. I am not sure
what anyone can really do to help other than to think of those people and
accept how frightened they are. But for most everyone else, it is a question of
disbelief, anger, resentment, determination and concern. A lot of kids here are
getting extra attention and more time with parents and teachers to talk about
it all. But I think the pendulum, as this third day of national mourning
starts, is beginning to swing toward let’s show this small group that they will
not force us to change our lives. I heard a call this morning to make
reservations to eat at a bistro, anywhere, today, preferably on a sidewalk to
show determination not to be intimidated.
What worries me most is the
likely political overreaction to what happened. After all, the perpetrators
were only a small group of terrible people, perhaps encouraged or even directed
by another group perhaps in Syria, but we don’t know for sure. This is not the
Germans invading again as in WWII, and as you have seen me say, these were a
series of heinous criminal acts and what we need most right now is for all the
thousands of law enforcement officers involved in the investigation to do their
jobs, identify and prosecute any survivors who are culpable, and THEN, and ONLY
THEN, embark on new measures to help better address some of the underlying
issues that permit or foment such actions. We should not move to deprive the
rest of France of its rights and liberties which is where the government seems
headed.
In a word, the state of things
is confusion, but still with the potential to the do the right thing but the
potential, too, to do many wrong things. Future days will tell us which."
Psychiatry and the Paris attacks - Télématin - France 2
Yes, let's focus on why the people who did these awful things were able to do so, and far less on condemning so many simply because they adhere to the same religion.

Lots of interesting things here.
